Our journey begins at Slovenia’s most visited attraction, the spectacular Postojna Cave — often called the “Queen of the Caves.”

This extraordinary karst cave system is a network of chambers, halls, and passages stretching deep beneath the surface. You enter by an open underground train, adding a sense of adventure as you travel into the depths. Inside, countless stalactites and stalagmites create a magical landscape, beautifully illuminated to showcase their intricate formations.

Here, you will also discover Slovenia’s most unusual and beloved creature — the endemic olm, affectionately known as the “human fish” or baby dragon, which has lived in these underground waters for millions of years.

A short scenic drive brings us to one of the most dramatic castles in Europe: Predjama Castle.

Built directly into the mouth of a cave and set within a 123-meter-high (404-foot) rock face, this Renaissance fortress is often described as the most dramatic castle in Slovenia — and reputedly one of the most haunted in Europe. During your visit, you’ll hear the fascinating story of its most famous resident, the rebellious knight Erazem Lueger, whose legend still echoes through the castle walls.

Optional Alternative: UNESCO Škocjan Caves

On request, Postojna Cave can be replaced with the UNESCO-protected Škocjan Caves.

Škocjan offers a very different and more physically demanding experience. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features one of the largest underground caverns in Europe, with dramatic footbridges overlooking a vast subterranean canyon and a powerful underground river flowing below — a setting often compared to scenes from epic fantasy films.

It is also possible to visit both cave systems in one day (additional charge). Please note that this option makes for a very active day, with return to Ljubljana after 6 pm. Both cave experiences are available year-round.
