DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1: BLED, SLOVENIA / full day

We will start our morning hike from the beautiful green plateau of Pokljuka (1300m/4265 feet) up to Blejska cottage (1630m/5348 feet) where we will have lunch in mountain cottage – sour milk, cheese and buck weed dumplings will fill you up for rugged mountain paths which will take us up to one of the best viewpoints in the area. At 1965m the trail opens out directly opposite the Julian Alps and Mount Triglav. Upon reaching the hut, the view opens up over the surrounding Karavanke Mountains, Ljubljana and Austria in the distance. Continue our day with another beautiful feature of the area – Vintgar gorge. We will have a lovely hike in a 1,6 km/1-mile-long Vintgar gorge which carves its way through the vertical rocks and is graced with waterfalls, pools and rapids. Afternoon at leisure or optional visit to the tiny island of Lake Bled is possible with a traditional wooden rowing boat called pletna. In the island’s church you can ring a bell of wishes, a tradition, that is most possibly 500 years old. Visitors can choose to visit the island with a stand up pedal board SUP instead of pletna.

Meals: lunch in Blejska cottage

Overnight: Bled

DAY 2: BLED – BOVEC/KOBARID / full day

Morning drive across Vrsic mountain pass. The road to reach the summit is known as Ruska cesta (“Russian Road”), renamed in July 2006 to honour the Russian prisoners of war that were forced to build it during WWI. The Austro-Hungarian authorities decided early in 1915 that they needed a road to supply their forces who were preparing to defend their border with Italy (to become known as the Isonzo Front). A scenic drive will undoubtedly offer breathtaking views of the mountains and Soca river. We will walk to the very source of Soca river (1h 30 min). Arriving in Bovec, adrenaline capital of Slovenia, will give us time for a lunch break and last minute gear shopping for upcoming optional Whitewater rafting (or kayaking or canyoning or skydiving). Evening at leisure.

Meals: breakfast (depends on the choice of stay)

Overnight: Bovec or Kobarid

DAY 3: BOVEC/KOBARID / optionals

Morning visit of the WWI museum in Kobarid will give us an unbiased insight of the events that happened in one of the major battles in the history of mankind on hilly terrain. Museum was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize and since its opening in 1990, it was visited by many notable people like monarchs, presidents of states, church superiors etc.
The rest of the day is at leisure or you can decide to join several optional activities such as guided tours/hikes of former battlefields of the Isonzo Front or spend the day pampering yourself at one of the best restaurants in the world at Hisa Franko.

Option no. 1: Tour of the former battlefield – Rommel’s route
Tour description: The tour was described by Erwin Rommel himself; see the chapter on the breakthrough near Tolmin in his book Infanterie greift an (Infantry Attacks). The tour starts at the German charnel house at the confluence of the Soča and the Tolminka, or in the village of Volče. We walk along the old track towards the hamlet of Foni. At midway point we turn sharply uphill and climb to the crossing with the macadam road Volče – Solarji, then we follow the ridge path, passing by the ruins of St. James’s church, the alp of Kovačičeva Planina and the hunters’ cabin, until we reach the “1114 point” – Na gradu. There is an outdoor museum here, i.e. partly restored trenches of the 3rd Italian Army line. The methods of fortifying trenches are displayed which were used in this area by the Italian Army. Some original material has been used for the restoration: concrete loopholes, wire networks, tin roofing, etc. On the “1114 point”, a panoramic view opens over the valley of the Soča, the Kanin range, Mt. Krn, Mt. Mrzli Vrh, the Banjška Planota plateau, the Friuli lowland, the Adriatic, and northward to Mt. Matajur and Mt. Stol. The tour can end on Mt. Nagnoj (1192 m), Mt. Kuk (1245 m), or even on the top of Mt. Matajur (1642), just like Erwin Rommel did with his troop on 26 October 1917. The tour runs through the range of mountains of medium height which have, except for the upper parts, already been overgrown with wood.
Vertical drop: 1000 m/3280 feet – a tour of medium difficulty
Time required: 5-6 hours
Equipment: mountaineering clothing and footwear, trekking poles, helmet-lamp, extra clothing, drinking water (2 l/person).

Option no. 2: Tour of The ridge of Kolovrat – outdoor museum Na gradu
Tour description: a drive from Kobarid to Idrsko and then uphill to Livek, Livške Ravne and along the ridge of Kolovrat to the outdoor museum beneath the “1114 point” – Na gradu. Stol.
Departure: From Kobarid
Time Required: 3 hours – easy tour
Equipment: trekking footwear

Option no. 3: Hisa Franko restaurant, Ana Roš (Best Female Chef 2017)
Ana Roš brought local ingredients into the restaurant, adopted a “zero kilometre” approach and build a food chain of around 60 people, which in turn helped the community to re-establish lost traditions. She began to apply and combine ingredients, creating beautiful dishes such as trout and its liver with white asparagus and pink grapefruit, while her husband Valter, who doubles as the sommelier, started ageing local Tolmin cheese in their cellar. Hiša Franko is a cosy family restaurant, located in an idyllic rural setting overlooking the lush Soča Valley itself. It attracts customers from across the globe to sample Roš’s unique tasting menus. The dishes are seasonal and may include marble trout, green peas, blackcurrants, fermented trout liver; and tripe, duck jus, cave cheese, fried nettles and chanterelles. The flavours are bold and the focus is on the ingredients rather than fancy modern cooking techniques. The restaurant ranks No. 69 in the world, according to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants organization.

Option no. 4: Adrenaline activities
You have several options and choices like kayaking or canyoning, zip lining or skydiving.

Meals: breakfast
Overnight: Bovec or Kobarid

DAY 4: BOVEC/KOBARID – LJUBLJANA / full day

Morning departure to a place that looks like something out of The Lord of the Rings. Skocjan caves are a UNESCO protected site. The real attraction here is the largest underground cavern in all of Europe. What steals the show from other caves are spectacular views from many footbridges overlooking underground canyon and the underground river flowing inside the cave. As you walk along, you have to remind yourself that what you see is real. Continue to Ljubljana, a charming capital city of Slovenia. Ljubljana is a city that will surprise you and exceed your expectations. It is unique – small by surface area, but huge in terms of hospitality and quality of life. It was awarded as European Green Capital 2016, the first and only green oasis in central and southeastern Europe. Guided city tour features Plecnik’s Triple bridge, baroque St. Nicholas Cathedral, Renaissance City hall and Art Nouveau street.
